Answers to common questions

We’ve compiled a list of answers to common questions.

Which Airport is closest to you?

We recommend coming into Edinburgh Airport, which is 45 minutes away by car and easily accessible via train and tram.

Do we need a car?

We recommend hiring a car, because the more interesting sights are not easily accessible by public transportation.

Where can we rent bicycles?

Loch Leven Cycles has a wide range of bicycles for hire and supply helmets. Nearby’s the Loch Leven Heritage Trail, a newly opened track that wraps around all of the Loch, with interesting places to eat along the way. You can hire bicycles for the family and make a day of it.

Spokes in St Andrews is another option, if you’d like to explore cycle routes throughout Fife, including coastal towns. Tentsmuir Forest is a particularly nice and easy cycle route through the woods on a good network of firm, level trails.

Where can we eat locally on our first night?

Within walking distance there aren’t many places that serve dinner late, so it may be difficult to get a table from 7.30/8. So if you don’t have a car, have a bite to eat in Edinburgh, then hop on a later train back to the Maltings (Sushiya on Dalry Road is an exceptional Japanese restaurant, less than a 5 minute walk to/from Haymarket Station). If you do have a car, there are many options locally in Markinch, Balbirnie or further afield in St Andrews.
