Outlander Filmed Near Here in Scotland

Scotland is one of those places. It is wildly beautiful but remote and not thickly settled. Consequently a lot of the history is still lying right on the surface.

Diana Gabaldon, author of Outlander Series.

So right she is! Here on our doorstep we have the 16th century Falkland Palace (with the oldest Royal Tennis Courts in Britain) representing 1940s Inverness in Outlander; the Bruce Fountain where Frank witnesses the ghost of Jamie looking up at Claire in the first episode; Doun Castle as Castle Leoch, home to Colum Mackenzie and his clan; the fictional village of Cranesmuir; 12th century Aberdour Castle that was Sainte Anne de Beaupre’s monastery in France, which Jamie flees to; and the  Reaper Tall ship in the first episode of the new series.

Country Retreat

The Old Maltings is unique for its central location in the home of Golf. We are a springboard to 44 courses in incredible locations, by the sea and in the countryside, including St Andrews, Kingsbarns and Gleneagles. The Old Maltings is set in a quiet countryside, near Falkland estate that is the home to red squirrels, deer and a range of birds, and one of the oldest organic farms in Scotland growing salads, vegetables, apples and keeping laying hens. We are close to breathtaking beaches and characteristic fishing villages — there are even Puffins, a short boat tour away to the Isle of May! The Old Maltings itself was built in 1601 and was the favoured distillery of Falkland Palace. The proprietor today is a professional glass artist. Where the original maltings steeped grain, she now melts glass.

Art Gallery and Open Studios

Scottish arts is fizzing with energy.

Jonathan Jones, the Guardian

There are a number of traditional yet cutting edge crafts here in Fife – and our Art Gallery at the Old Maltings exhibits and sells this work – ranging from bronze castings and glass sculptures through to handmade/hand dyed/loom woven/screen printed textiles and paintings.

We offer tours to Artist studios in the area, whose work is international, yet inspired locally by our landscape, culture and tradition. Why not visit our studios and buy or commission authentic Scottish arts and fashion?

Guest Reviews

This was the most charming little Scottish town! Great location in this quaint, quiet town but conveniently accessible to St. Andrews and Edinburgh. It's just like something from a movie. Charrone was accommodating, friendly and so helpful. She offered suggestions of local attractions and loaned us maps and such. The bedroom and bath were neat, clean and pleasant. Sleeping on her waterbed felt like sleeping on a cloud. She is the kind of person you can immediately feel at home with. Thank you Charrone for enhancing our lovely Scottish holiday!

Charonne was very welcoming upon arrival and made us feel instantly at home. Charonne thought of everything from picking us up from the train station to supplying us with a lovely selection of breakfast food. She was very knowledgable about the area and helped us arrange our transport for the weekend. The area was very beautiful and we wish we'd seen more. We would definitely use Charonne again in the future.

Charonne went out of her way to make sure we would be comfortable in her home, and we were. It was cozy and easily accommodated our two families (eight people in total). It felt like we had a real Scottish experience being in a wee village in the countryside. We were able to head off in various directions for day trips, but were also grateful for a lovely place to rest in on January 1!
